EXECUTIVE INSIGHT – Eye on the Economy
The past year has seen lot of debate on “decoupling” of Asian economies from the US economy, with practical implications on whether the former might avoid following the latter into recession. The debate has largely followed current trends on GDP growth and financial market indicators, without providing adequate insights into the key engines of sustained growth within individual countries in Asia. This presentation will focus on a critical review of existing analyses, drawing important distinctions between trade relations and financial market co-movements, and amongst different types of shock and sectoral linkages.
Against the argument that Asian fundamentals and firms are stronger today than in 1997, the presentation points out several constraints in Asian countries’ policy adjustments to combat impacts of the US economic downturn, including limited growth potentials in domestic consumption, government spending, and new sources for foreign investment, and political rigidities facing currency adjustments. Particular attention will be paid to the Chinese economy in the next few months as the primary source of intra-regional demand buffer until the US economy could achieve a soft landing.
